Albert Pujols will try to recapture his prime in 2022 MLB Home Run Derby

Albert Pujols is one of the greatest sluggers of all time. That can be hard to remember if you were only looking at the handful of home runs he's hit so far this season for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Pujols in his prime, though? Few hitters were better at cranking out long balls.

His highest mark was a 49 home run season in 2006, but the big slugger flirted with 50 home runs multiple times throughout his career.

He averaged 40.5 home runs per season in his first stint with the Cardinals, which lasted 11 years. Though Pujols certainly hit the "back nine" of his career when he joined the Los Angeles Angeles, he still put up a 40 home run season in 2015, and he averaged just over 22 home runs per season while with Los Angeles.

Pujols will find himself amongst sluggers like Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth by the time it's all said and done, and he's already hot on their tails on the MLB's all-time home runs list.

He's not the slugger he once was, but Pujols is certainly one of the greatest long-ball hitters of all time. And yes, he may not be a serious threat to knock off New York Mets' slugger Pete Alonso at the 2022 MLB Home Run Derby, but he's certainly worth the invite, isn't he?

That's an invite he has secured, according to Katie Woo of The Athletic.

Pujols will join Alonso, who has won the past two Derbys, and Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Atlanta Braves.

Pujols, who will participate in his fifth Home Run Derby, has six home runs on the season. Alonso has hit 23 while Acuña Jr. has eight.
