Golf best bets: 3 props for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans

The PGA Tour takes a page out of LIV Golf's book this week with the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a team event in which players compete as duos for four rounds. The teams will compete in fourballs (best ball) in Rounds 1 and 3 and foursomes (alternate shot) in Rounds 2 and 4.

Here are our three favorite prop bets for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

72-hole matchup: Billy Horschel/Tyson Alexander > Matti Schmid/Alex Smalley (-125 FanDuel)

We have high hopes for the Billy Horschel/Tyson Alexander duo this week. Horschel is coming off a win at the Corales Puntacana Championship in which he shot a course-record 63 in the final round, and he has three straight top-11 finishes at this team event. He also won the Zurich Classic twice; once by himself when it was a solo event and once alongside Scott Piercy. He sure does love TPC Louisiana, so it might not matter who his partner is.

As for the other team, Alex Smalley has been dreadful this season with seven cuts in his last eight starts. Matti Schmid has been playing some decent golf, but Smalley is by far the coldest player between these two teams.

Corey Conners/Taylor Pendrith top-10 finish (+250 DraftKings)

At the Zurich Classic, it's important to balance your team with different strengths. That's exactly what the Canadian duo of Corey Conners and Taylor Pendrith have done.

Conners is one of the best ball strikers on the PGA Tour. He ranks fifth on Tour this season in strokes gained on approach and 23rd in strokes gained off the tee, but his ceiling is low because he's such a poor putter. Pendrith, who's struggled off the tee and on approach this year, ranks 22nd on Tour in strokes gained from putting. He's gained strokes on the green in seven straight measured starts.

This team is going to rack up a ton of birdies in the alternate shot format, which isn't easy to do.

Taylor Montgomery/Ben Griffin top-20 finish (+180 FD)

You can't finish well at the Zurich Classic unless you make birdies in bunches, and that's what this team will be able to do thanks to Taylor Montgomery's putter. Montgomery ranks first on the PGA Tour this season in strokes gained from putting, first in putting inside 10 feet and fifth in one-putt percentage. He can really pour it in on the greens.

Ben Griffin doesn't jump off the page statistically, but he's gained strokes on approach, around the green and from putting in three straight starts. He has two top-20 finishes in his last four events, so he's coming in with some confidence.
