Next fall, the Wolverines are going to need a new quarterback — after two years with JJ McCarthy at the helm, he’s headed to the NFL Draft. In his place could be a number of talented players, perhaps even a new Michigan football transfer; in fact, one proposed replacement was Maryland Terrapins standout Taulia Tagovailoa, though he is no longer an option for anyone who was interested.

Maryland Terrapins quarterback no longer a Michigan football transfer portal option

At one time, some believed that Michigan football may have been interested in pursuing Taulia Tagovailoa in the transfer portal, though that entirely relied on him being granted an extra year of eligibility — something the NCAA reportedly gunned down this week.

Per a report from Pete Thamel of ESPN, Taulia Tagovailoa was denied a sixth season of college football, meaning the potential transfer portal quarterback target is no longer an option for teams like Michigan football and others heading into 2024.

“Sources: Former Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa’s waiver for an additional year of eligibility has been denied,” reads Thamel’s tweet. “This is despite Nick Saban and Alabama writing a strong plea to the NCAA in his support. Tagovailoa will begin training for the upcoming NFL Draft.”

Who could be the Wolverines’ quarterback in 2024?

The Michigan football fan base seemed split on whether or not Taulia Tagovailoa would be a serviceable replacement at quarterback heading into 2024; however, seeing as he is the Big Ten’s all-time passing yards leader, there would have been grounds for optimism if the Wolverines landed his commitment from the portal. Of course, that doesn’t matter much anymore.
