LSU RB John Emery Absent From Day 1 of Spring Camp
USA TODAY Sports

LSU running back John Emery Jr. was absent for Day 1 of the Tigers 2023 spring camp. The fifth-year senior, who bypassed the NFL Draft to return to Baton Rouge, will not be with the team for camp as it stands right now.

Instead, Emery will focus on academics, Head Coach Brian Kelly said after practice on Thursday.

“John [Emery] is strictly focused right now on his academics,” Kelly said. “He’s got some marks that he has to hit from an academic standpoint before we talk about football with him.”

It was a decision Coach Kelly and Emery’s family came to this offseason as Emery works towards getting his degree from LSU.

“That was the deal with John when talking with his family,” Kelly said. “If his primary focus was academics and taking care of his degree, then we would have a conversation about football. So right now his focus is 100% on that.”

With Emery not participating with the Tigers during spring camp currently, and the Tigers down both Armoni Goodwin and Josh Williams as the two nurse knee injuries, it leaves this running back room in a bind.

On Thursday, the only two scholarship running backs participating were Noah Cain and early-enrollee Trey Holly.

For now, Emery will not be with the team during camp as he focuses on academics and earning his degree from LSU.
