Carl Froch has hit back at Andre Ward’s comments about Joe Calzaghe potentially being a more challenging opponent than Anthony Joshua.

Froch is a former super middleweight champion who has shared the ring with Ward, only to come out second best. That was Froch’s only defeat in his career as Ward retired unbeaten. Despite links with a rematch, it never got made. Ward would also move up to 175 pounds to take on Sergey Kovalev.

He would beat the Russian in two consecutive fights before retiring. Both boxers have entered the Hall of Fame, but the bad blood continues even in their retirement. Ward claimed that Calzaghe, who also retired unbeaten, would have been a tougher test than Anthony Joshua.

Ward’s Comments

“The big, one shot would have been my concern with Anthony Joshua. He doesn’t have the style – he’s not like a big man, like George Foreman. George knows how to tie you up and walk you back and wear you down. [Joshua’s] trying to box and be cute as well. I can look out for that right hand a lot easier when you fight like that, so Joe Calzaghe would have been a tougher fight. A different style, and a different mentality,” Ward said

In response, Froch had something else to say

Froch Reacts

“I think Andre Ward’s comments on Anthony Joshua and Joe Calzaghe are f—— ridiculous because Anthony Joshua is far too big for him. It would be a mismatch because of the size difference. I don’t get where he’s coming from. AJ is six feet six and 18 stone, Andre Ward wouldn’t have a f——- chance.

“Boxing is a weight governed sport, Ward is talking nonsense. I think he gives Calzaghe a really tough fight though, that’s a tough night for Calzaghe, a great fight. But he’s talking bullsh!t about Anthony Joshua. AJ is too big and too strong for Andre Ward, I’d actually enjoy watching AJ knockout Andre Ward, I’d pay to see it. But Ward does beat Calzaghe,” Froch stated

The fight never happened, nor was it likely to, as Ward never returned to the sport. The only opponent suggested as a possible target to get him out of retirement was Canelo Alvarez. The Mexican is the Undisputed Super Middleweight champion, whose only losses have come against Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol.

Ward claimed that Alvarez never called him out while he was active, shutting down any chances of him making a comeback. But given that Ward’s style was similar to that of Mayweather in being able to outbox his opponent with a solid defence, it would have been an intriguing match-up. Canelo has arguably achieved more than Ward, but both are considered some of the best fighters ever. But this is one bout that boxing fans will not get to see in their lifetime. And there is no getting away from that.
