Flashback: Bernard Hopkins vs. Roy Jones Jr. II – Reliving the Rematch of Boxing Legends

On April 3, 2010, Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. met in their much anticipated rematch at 175lbs. The first fight between the two happened 17 years earlier on May 22, 1993 for the vacant IBF middleweight championship, with Jones winning by unanimous decision with all three judge’s scoring the bout 116–112 in Jones’ favour. Hopkins was ready for revenge, and he dominated most of the fight, as Jones was unabe to breach the watertight defence of “The Executioner.” Jones struggled to get any kind of momentum going due to the effective game plan from Hopkins.

“B-Hop” was the most forward thinking out of the two, but he struggled to land consistently, much like his opponent. It was a difficult fight to watch, with no real sign it would burst into life. This much anticipated rematch had its controversial moments with the “The Executioner” being knocked down on three occasions due to fouls from “Junior.”

The first foul knockdown came as a result of an illegal punch to the back of Hopkins head. Hopkins took three minutes to recover, while a point was taken off Jones. In the eighth round, Hopkins was hit with another rabbit punch, and in round ten he was hit with a low blow, but amazingly no more points were taken from “Junior.”

Decision and Summary

Both fighters made it to the final bell, and “The Executioner” was deservedley awarded the win by unanimous decision, with one judges card reading 118–109 and the other two reading 117–110. But this was far from memorable and did not live up to any of the pre fight anticipation.

These two will forever be involved in any conversation regarding the greatest boxers of their generation, but this was a difficult watch and a fight anyone watching will likely want to forget.
