Boxing champion Claressa Shields teases WWE appearance

In an interview on "The MMA Hour" on Wednesday, Claressa Shields — a highly accomplished multi-division boxing champion and mixed martial artist — teased a potential move to the WWE.

“It’s some things happening [with WWE]; you’ll have to just wait,” Shields said regarding the professional wrestling company.

Shields is known for trash-talking and a brash demeanor, which promote and generate excitement for her fights. Given her outspoken personality, a transition to WWE wouldn’t be strange.

Shields also expressed interest in accomplishing something that no other boxer has accomplished, but again, the two-time Olympic gold medalist was light on details.

“I believe that the stars are aligning for me, and I’ll be doing things that people have never seen another African-American woman do in boxing,” she said.

The WWE thrives on strong personalities and engaging storylines, making it a perfect platform for Shields to showcase her compelling persona.

Given the success of athletes who have transitioned from other sports to WWE, such as Ronda Rousey, Shayna Baszler and Matt Riddle, among others, it’s likely that Shields will thrive in professional wrestling.

Shields, an undefeated boxer, has a proven track record of testing herself in another sport. Shields made a successful MMA debut in June 2021, winning her first bout by TKO. Four months later, she suffered her first loss by split decision to Abigail Montes.

WWE will host "SummerSlam" on Aug. 5 in Detroit. Michigan is Shields' home state.

Shields (13-0) is scheduled to face Maricela Cornejo in a boxing match in Detroit on Saturday.
