Why the Dodgers didn't get Dempster
The Los Angeles Dodgers never budged.
They had four young pitchers whom they refused to trade for a potential free agent such as right-hander Ryan Dempster. And they ultimately lost Dempster to the Texas Rangers when none of their other offers satisfied the Chicago Cubs.
The four untouchables in the Dempster talks, according to major-league sources, were right-handers Zach Lee, Allen Webster and Rubby De La Rosa, and left-hander Chris Reed.
The Dodgers kept all of them — and most of their other better prospects — while acquiring infielder Hanley Ramirez, center fielder Shane Victorino and relievers Brandon League and Randy Choate in three different trades.
The team’s failure to land Dempster left it without a replacement for right-hander Nate Eovaldi, who went to the Miami Marlins in the Ramirez/Choate trade.
However, De La Rosa and lefty Ted Lilly currently are on rehabilitation assignments, and Webster and right-hander John Ely are additional options in the minors.

McClendon has a "calm demeanor"? Sure he does - until he loses his temper and goes beserk. Nobody can go ballistic better than Lloyd. One of his best was when he couldn't win an argument with the 1st base umpire, so he picked up the 1st base bag and carried it back to the dugout. It was classic. Kind of reminded me of Bob Knight at this best.
