Now that Matt Thornton and Francisco Rodriguez have been dealt, it may be a matter of days before a San Diego Padres reliever – or two – is traded, as well.
Padres general manager Josh Byrnes could move multiple relievers before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, from a group that includes right-handers Luke Gregerson, Huston Street and Dale Thayer, and left-hander Joe Thatcher.
The Detroit Tigers have interest in Gregerson, while the Atlanta Braves are among the teams pursuing Thatcher, according to major-league sources.
Many scouts have attended the Padres’ series in Milwaukee this week, including representatives from the Tigers, Braves, Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox.
The Padres would like to acquire potential high-end starting pitchers, but it is unclear if they will accomplish that by trading relievers.
