Sources: Padres righties Harang, Qualls clear waivers
The Padres were less active than many observers expected at the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. Most notably, they held on to Heath Bell despite heavy interest in him.
But there’s still a chance for the Padres to make deals before tonight’s midnight ET deadline to set postseason rosters.
San Diego starter Aaron Harang and reliever Chad Qualls are among the players who have cleared trade waivers this month, major league sources told FOXSports.com.
One source indicated Wednesday evening that a trade involving Harang had become more likely. But it’s not clear which teams are interested. The Angels are open to upgrading their rotation, but Harang is seen as best suited for the National League.
Harang is 3-1 with a 4.55 ERA in five starts this month. He’s scheduled to start again Friday. Qualls, meanwhile, hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last eight innings.
The Phillies and Giants are among the teams interested in acquiring a reliever, but it’s not clear if any of them are engaged in serious talks on Qualls.
