Pirates still looking for a shortstop
The Pirates made another attempt to trade for Twins shortstop J.J. Hardy on Thursday night, but were unable to complete a deal, major league sources say.
The Twins tendered Hardy a contract by the midnight ET deadline, but still could trade him and go with Tsuyoshi Nishioka and Alexi Casilla as their middle infield.
The Pirates continue to engage in trade discussions for at least two available shortstops – Hardy and the Rays’ Jason Bartlett.
The Orioles and Padres also are looking for shortstops. The Giants and Cardinals still could upgrade, even after aquiring Miguel Tejada and Ryan Theriot, respectively.
