Arizona looking within to improve
Coming off a surprising National League West championship season, Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers is more focused on keeping his roster together than making a series of offseason moves.
The most pressing issue for Arizona is deciding whether to re-sign left-handed starter Joe Saunders, who is likely in line for a significant raise from his $5.5 million salary of 2011. Arizona seems inclined, instead, to give top-line prospects Jarrod Parker, Trevor Bauer and Tyler Skaggs a shot in the spring to claim that rotation spot.
The priority this week for Arizona will be trying to sign catcher Miguel Montero to a multiyear contract. Montero, 28, was a first-time All-Star in 2011 when he moved into the cleanup spot in the Arizona order and hit .282 with 18 home runs, 86 RBI and 36 doubles.
